Le montréalais Benjamin Deschamps est un saxophoniste, flutiste, clarinettiste, compositeur et arrangeur bien connu de la scène jazz montréalaise. Il a été nommé Révélation Radio-Canada Jazz en 2017-2018.

À la tête de son groupe, il a remporté en 2013 le grand prix du Festi Jazz de Rimouski. En 2014, il a lancé son premier album, intitulé What do we know, sous étiquette Oddsound. En 2019, il est récipiendaire du Grand Prix TD du Festival international de jazz de Montréal. Benjamin Deschamps a aussi reçu le prix Stingray Rising Star du Festival de jazz de Halifax en 2018. Détenteur du prix « Création jazz » du Conseil des arts de Montréal en 2016, il lance son deuxième album Demi-Nuit en 2017. Avec son quintette, groupe lauréat du Grand Prix du JPL Victo Jazz 2019, Benjamin présente cet album au Québec, en Ontario ainsi que dans les provinces maritimes du Canada et en France. En 2018, Deschamps met sur pied le collectif No Codes et sort son troisième album de musique originale du même nom, faisant par la suite une tournée canadienne en 2019 dans les plus grands festivals de jazz au pays pour présenter son nouvel opus.

En tant que sideman, on peut l’entendre au sein du quintette de la trompettiste Rachel Therrien avec lequel il a tourné dans l’Ouest canadien ainsi qu’au Mexique. Il joue également avec l’Ensemble Charles Trudel, avec lequel il a fait plusieurs tournées, visitant la France, la Belgique et le Québec. Il fait également partie du JazzLab Orchestra sous la direction d’Alain Bédard, faisant plusieurs tournées en 2019 au Canada, en France, en Italie et en Pologne.

Benjamin Deschamps est souvent appelé pour accompagner des artistes et des projets de la scène pop, notamment Damien Robitaille, Steve Hill, le chanteur Garou, la production Forever Gentlemen (Garou, Roch Voisine et Corneille), la tournée entourant le disque Les Prêtres de Mario Pelchat ainsi que le spectacle Broadway Beautiful : The music of Carol King.

English biography

Based in Montreal, Benjamin Deschamps, named Révélation Radio-Canada Jazz 2017-18, is a sought after saxophonist, flutist, clarinettist, composer and arranger.

As the leader of his own band, he won the Rimouski’s Festi Jazz Grand Prize in 2013 and released his first record, titled What Do We Know, in 2014. In 2019, he received the Festival international de jazz de Montreal TD Grand Jazz Award, after being nominated twice before, in 2014 and in 2017. He was also nominated for the Halifax Jazz Festival Stingray Rising Star Award in 2018. Laureate of the Jazz Creation Award by the Montreal Council for the Arts in 2016, Deschamps released his second record, Demi-Nuit, in 2017. With his Quintet, he won the JPL Victo Jazz Award in 2019, and presented his music all around the provinces of Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes. In September 2018, he puts together the music collective No Codes and released his third record of original music.

Recipient of a Jazz Performance Master’s degree from McGill University, Benjamin is a very active musician on both local and international jazz scenes. We can hear him as a sideman in the Rachel Therrien Quintet, with whom he toured in western Canada and in Mexico. We can also hear him in the Charles Trudel Ensemble, with whom he toured in France, Belgium, Abitibi and the Bas-Saint-Laurent. Benjamin is also a member of the JazzLab Orchestra, led by Alain Bédard, touring in 2019 in Canada, France, Italy and Poland.

Benjamin is often requested to accompany pop artists and projects, such as Damien Robitaille, Steve Hill, Garou, the production Forever Gentlemen (Garou, Roch Voisine and Corneille), the tour for Mario Pelchat’s album Les Prêtres as well as the Broadway show Beautiful: The music of Carol King.
